Reading and memory apps for ADHD: where do you start?

Start with where you stall. If you do not start reading, use a timer or a body-doubling session. If the pages feel like wading, listen: Libby audiobooks or your phone’s built-in read-aloud. If you come back to a book and the story is gone, use a recap that stops at your page: Magic Bookmark for supported titles on iPhone, or Kindle’s Story So Far in Kindle ebooks. If daily things slip, give each kind of forgetting one app. The scored list is the best ADHD apps for reading.

This category covers apps for two connected jobs: getting through books, and holding the things your head should not have to. Everything here is sorted by the job it does, scored on the same rubric as the rest of the site, and dated.

What does this category cover?

  • Starting a reading session: timers, body doubling, phone quieting.
  • Getting through the pages: audiobooks, text to speech, reading and listening at once.
  • Coming back after a gap: page-locked recaps and cast lists.
  • External memory beyond books: tasks, reminders, ideas and medication, held in apps instead of your head.

It does not cover brain training, comprehension programs or anything that claims to treat ADHD. See our medical disclaimer.

How is this category scored?

On the same eight-criterion rubric as every app here, with reading-specific readings of two criteria: capture becomes how quickly you can tell an app where you are, and forgiveness becomes what happens when you come back after a gap. New reading entries are provisional desk reviews with partial scores, shown as points out of the points available (Magic Bookmark: 55/70). Existing apps that appear here, such as Llama Life and Focusmate, keep the provisional totals they have on our other lists.

What is the one thing to try this week?

Pick one book you want to finish and one tool for the place it stalls. If you are not sure where it stalls, try the free combination: your phone’s read-aloud or a Libby audiobook for one chapter, and a two-line note on your bookmark when you stop. Two weeks later, check whether you went back to the book. The trial log is a printable way to keep track.

Questions people actually ask

What are reading and memory apps?

Apps that help you start, get through and get back into books, plus apps that hold everyday information (tasks, reminders, ideas, medication) so you do not have to remember it.

What is the best ADHD app for reading?

It depends on where you stall: a timer or body doubling to start, audio to get through, a page-locked recap such as Magic Bookmark to come back after a gap. The scored list sorts them by job.

Do memory apps improve ADHD memory?

The ones we cover do not claim to. They act as external memory, holding things so you depend less on recall.
