What do the Kindle changes mean in practice?
If you read Kindle ebooks bought or borrowed through Amazon, in the US, you now have three free tools: Recaps for series catch-up, Story So Far for a recap up to where you stopped, and Ask this Book for questions without spoilers. Amazon said Ask this Book would expand to Kindle devices and the Android app. If you read in print, in audio, or in another ebook store, none of these apply.
What do the Magic Bookmark releases mean in practice?
Magic Bookmark fills the gap the Kindle tools leave: it works alongside your own copy in any format, for supported titles, on iPhone. Audiobook support on 27 October matters most for readers who listen: if your attention drifts during audio, rewinding blind to find your place in the story is slow. The app is about two months old on the US store, which is why its staying-power score in our desk review is modest. Its first book is free.
What is not in this log?
Changes we could not date from a primary or reputable source. Feature claims from forums. Price changes we have not checked; those go on the price tracker and the reading app prices sheet with their own dates. How do you choose between these tools today?
- Kindle ebook reader in the US: start with the free Kindle tools.
- Print, audiobook or non-Kindle ebook reader on iPhone: check whether your title is in Magic Bookmark’s catalog, and try the free first book.
- Android reader outside Kindle: no page-locked recap app on this list yet; use a two-line bookmark note and see how to finish books with ADHD.
- Anyone: avoid asking a general chatbot for a mid-book recap unless you state your exact place; it does not know your page.
