Magic Bookmark vs Speechify: which one does an ADHD reader need?

They do different jobs, so this is less a contest than a choice of problem. Speechify reads text aloud with highlighting, which helps when getting through the words is the hard part. Magic Bookmark tells you what has happened up to your page, which helps when remembering the story is the hard part. Both are provisional desk reviews here, scored only where their official pages give evidence.

A recap tool, not a reader. It targets a common way a paused book stays paused: coming back after a gap and not remembering who anyone is. It covers only titles in its catalog and runs only on iPhone, but the first book is free, so the trial costs nothing beyond the privacy trade.

The flexible listen-and-follow tool: it reads almost any text aloud, but the version most people want is a subscription.

Pick by scenario

Pick Magic Bookmark if...

You can read the words fine but lose the story after a break, your book is in its catalog, and you have an iPhone. It works with print, ebook or audiobook, and the first book is free.

Pick Speechify if...

Getting through the page is the hard part, and hearing the words while seeing them highlighted keeps you moving. It runs on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows and in Chrome and Edge, with almost any text, including a photo of a printed page.

Use both if...

You listen to get through a dense book and still need a recap after a gap. Speechify does not track the plot for you, and Magic Bookmark does not read the book aloud.

Pick neither if...

Your book is not in Magic Bookmark’s catalog and you mainly want to listen: borrowing the audiobook free from your library through Libby, or your phone’s built-in read-aloud, may solve it without a new subscription.

What does each one actually do?

Magic Bookmark works alongside your own copy of a book. You snap a photo of your page, type the page number, or for an audiobook enter the last phrase you heard. It then gives a recap that stops at that point, a cast list of only the characters you have met, spoiler-free answers to questions about the story so far, and chats with characters who only know the story up to your page. It covers a catalog of supported titles, mostly popular fiction. Full desk review.

Speechify reads text aloud in a choice of voices and highlights the words as it goes. Its site says it handles PDFs, EPUB and other files, web pages and scanned pages, and can read a photo of a printed page. Premium adds AI summaries and chats, but Speechify does not describe a page-locked, spoiler-free recap of a novel, which is Magic Bookmark’s specific job.

How do the prices compare?

  • Magic Bookmark: free download, first book free, then $4.99 per book, or packs of 5 for $19.99, 10 for $34.99 and 50 for $69.99 ($1.40 each). One credit covers a whole book. No subscription; credits never expire.
  • Speechify: free plan with speeds up to 1.5x, 10 robotic sounding voices and text to speech features only. Premium is $29 a month, or $139 billed yearly.

For an ADHD budget the structure matters as much as the number: credits do not renew, and a subscription does. If you choose Speechify Premium, set a reminder a week before it renews. More in what reading apps cost.

Which devices do they run on?

  • Magic Bookmark: iPhone, iOS 16.4 or later. The listing also shows Mac with Apple M1 or later but says it is not verified for macOS. No Android or web version yet; Android is on the developer’s roadmap.
  • Speechify: iOS, Android, Mac and Windows apps, plus Chrome and Edge extensions.

What have we not tested?

Neither app has been through our hands-on protocol. There are no setup times, tap counts or trial notes on this page. The rubric rows show provisional desk scores only where the official pages give evidence, and a dash where they do not. Magic Bookmark’s assessable criteria add up to 55 of 70 points; Speechify’s to 24 of 35. Those are not comparable with each other or with totals out of 100.

Questions people actually ask

Is Speechify good for ADHD?

It can suit readers who keep going better when they hear the words and see them highlighted together. It is a general text-to-speech tool, not an ADHD treatment, and we have not tested it hands-on yet.

Can Speechify summarize a book?

Speechify’s Premium plan lists AI Summaries & Chats. It does not describe a recap locked to your page that avoids spoilers for the rest of a novel, which is what Magic Bookmark is built for.

Can Magic Bookmark read a book aloud?

No. It works alongside your own copy, including audiobooks, and gives recaps, a cast list and spoiler-free answers. It does not read the text to you.

Which is cheaper, Magic Bookmark or Speechify?

It depends on how you read. Magic Bookmark’s first book is free, then $4.99 per book or less in packs, with no subscription. Speechify has a free plan; Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year.
