Does immersion reading help ADHD readers, and how do you set it up?
Immersion Reading highlights the Kindle ebook text as the Audible narrator reads it. You need both the Kindle ebook and the audiobook of a title that supports Read & Listen (formerly Whispersync for Voice), and it works in the Audible and Kindle apps on Android and iOS and on supported Kindle and Fire devices. Some ADHD readers find following highlighted words easier to stay with. To try the effect free first, use your phone’s read-aloud with highlighting or a library audiobook with the print book open.
Reading and listening at the same time gives your eyes a moving target and your ears a pace. Amazon calls its version Immersion Reading. Here is what it needs, and how to get the same effect without buying a book twice.
What is immersion reading?
Audible’s help page describes Read & Listen as a feature that keeps track of where you are when you switch between the audiobook and the Kindle ebook; it was formerly called Whispersync for Voice. When you own Read & Listen versions of both, you get Immersion Reading, which “lets you read and listen at the same time. The text highlights as the narrator reads.”
Audible also lists Page Sync, which lets you switch between a print book and the audiobook without losing your place. That one is about switching, not reading along.
Why might it suit an ADHD reader?
Two channels can be easier to keep than one. The narrator sets a pace, so you are not stuck rereading the same line. The highlight shows where that pace is, so your eyes have something to follow when attention flickers. When you drift, you can find your place again by looking for the moving highlight instead of scanning the whole page.
It is not for everyone. Some readers find two inputs at once more distracting, not less. Try it for a few sessions on a book you already want to read, and notice whether you end a chapter remembering more or less than usual. This is a reading-friction choice, not a treatment.
What do you need for Amazon’s version?
- Both formats of the same title: the Kindle ebook and the Audible audiobook, each in your library. Audible says the product details will show Read & Listen (formerly “Whispersync for Voice-ready”) if a title supports it, and the Kindle ebook page may offer to add Audible narration.
- A supported device. Audible lists the Audible apps for Android and iOS, Fire tablets FOS8 and above, Kindle e-readers from 2022 and later, and the Kindle apps for Android, iOS, Fire tablet and PC as supporting switching between reading and listening.
- Where to read along: Audible says you can use Immersion Reading in the Audible app, and in the Kindle app you can read and listen if you own both formats.
That means paying twice for one book unless the narration is discounted when you own the ebook. For a single book you are not sure about, try a free version of the effect first.
How do you get the same effect for free?
Ways to read and listen at the same time (official pages checked 2026-10-29)
| Method | Cost | Highlights as it reads | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle + Audible Immersion Reading | Both formats of the title | Yes, narrator-synced | Novels you want to own in both formats |
| iPhone Speak Screen in an ebook app | Free, built in | Yes, customizable highlight | Ebooks and articles on iPhone |
| Android Select to Speak | Free, built in | Not stated on the help page | Ebooks and web text on Android |
| Speechify | Free plan, or Premium $29 a month or $139 a year | Yes | Documents and web pages across devices |
| Library audiobook with the print book open | Free with a library card (Libby) | No, you follow by eye | Any book your library has in both formats |
Synthetic voices are flatter than a narrator, so for fiction the free library route (audiobook from Libby, print book from the shelf) is often the most pleasant read-along. More on the built-in options in text-to-speech apps for ADHD.
How do you run a read-along session?
- Step 1: Pick a chapter you were going to read anyway, not a new book.
- Step 2: Set the audio a little faster than normal speech. Many readers find slightly fast easier to follow than slow.
- Step 3: Follow the highlight, or your finger under the line if you are reading print alongside audio.
- Step 4: When you drift, do not rewind straight away. Look for the highlight and rejoin it; rewind only if the scene makes no sense.
- Step 5: At the end of the chapter, stop. Note your place on the bookmark, and whether the chapter stuck better than usual.
What does immersion reading not solve?
It helps you get through pages. It does not help you remember a story you put down three weeks ago. If you come back to a book and cannot place anyone, you need a recap before you need a narrator. Magic Bookmark recaps up to your exact page for supported titles on iPhone, including audiobooks since version 1.1.1 on 27 October 2026; Kindle’s Story So Far does the same inside Kindle ebooks in the US. Both are desk reviews on this site.
