Which text-to-speech app suits an ADHD reader?
Start with what your phone already has: iPhone Speak Screen and Speak Selection, or Android Select to Speak, both free and both able to highlight or read on-screen text. Move to Speechify if you want word highlighting across PDFs, ebooks, web pages and photos of printed pages on every device; its free plan runs up to 1.5x with 10 robotic voices, and Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year. For novels, an audiobook from Libby is often better than a synthetic voice.
Text to speech reads the page out loud so the words keep coming when your eyes or attention stall. You may not need to buy anything: both major phone systems have it built in.
Why do some ADHD readers use text to speech?
Reading a page asks you to keep your eyes moving and your attention on the same line at the same time. When one of those slips, you reach the bottom of the page with nothing in your head. Hearing the words gives the text a pace of its own, and following the highlighted words gives your eyes something to track. Some readers find that combination easier to stay with; others find a synthetic voice more distracting than silence. It is worth ten minutes to find out which you are.
This is a reading-friction tool, not a treatment. It does not change attention. It changes how much effort one page costs.
What is already on your phone for free?
- iPhone, Speak Selection: select text and tap Speak. Turn it on in Settings, Accessibility, Read & Speak.
- iPhone, Speak Screen: swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen and iPhone reads everything on it, with controls to pause, change the rate, and skip back. Apple lets you customize the highlight style for spoken text and keep the controller on screen.
- iPhone, Accessibility Reader: Apple’s support page also lists a full-screen reading view with adjustable fonts, layout and background colors, with an Autoplay option to read text aloud.
- Android, Select to Speak: turn it on in Settings, Accessibility. Start it with a two-finger swipe up (three fingers if TalkBack is on) or the Accessibility button, then tap or drag across what you want read. Google says some steps need Android 11 or later, and it can read text the camera sees in supported languages, including English.
These cost nothing and work in most apps, including many ebook apps. Their limits: voices are plainer than paid apps, and they read what is on screen rather than managing a whole document. Full steps in free ADHD reading tools.
When is a paid app like Speechify worth it?
Speechify’s pitch is breadth. Its site says it reads PDFs, EPUB, DOCX and TXT files, web links, scanned pages and pasted text, highlights words as it reads, and can read a photo of a printed page (Scan & Listen, listed under Premium). It runs on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows and as Chrome and Edge extensions.
The free plan allows speeds up to 1.5x with 10 robotic sounding voices and text to speech features only. Premium is $29 a month or $139 billed yearly and adds 1000+ voices, 60+ languages, faster speeds, Scan & Listen and AI summaries and chats.
It is worth paying if you read a lot of documents across devices and the built-in voices put you off. It is not worth paying to read one novel: borrow the audiobook instead. Our Speechify entry carries a provisional desk score of 24 of 35 assessable points, and Magic Bookmark vs Speechify explains how a reader differs from a recap tool.

How do you set up a first text-to-speech session?
- Step 1: Turn on Speak Screen (iPhone) or Select to Speak (Android). It takes under a minute in Settings, Accessibility.
- Step 2: Open one chapter or article you have been putting off.
- Step 3: Start the read-aloud and set the speed a notch faster than feels comfortable. Slightly fast tends to hold attention better than slow.
- Step 4: Follow the highlighted words with your eyes for the first page. Then decide: follow along, or just listen.
- Step 5: Stop at the end of the chapter, not mid-page, so the next session starts clean.
- Step 6: If the voice grates after three sessions, try an audiobook instead before paying for a premium voice.
What about novels and long books?
For fiction, a human narrator usually beats a synthetic voice, and libraries lend audiobooks free through Libby. If you own both the Kindle ebook and the Audible audiobook of a title that supports Read & Listen, you can read and listen at the same time with the text highlighting as the narrator reads; see immersion reading.
If your problem is less “getting through the words” and more “remembering what happened last time”, text to speech will not fix it. That is a recap job: see how to finish books with ADHD.
Questions people actually ask
Is text to speech good for ADHD?
It helps some readers stay with a page by giving the text a pace and something for the eyes to follow. Others find a synthetic voice distracting. Try your phone’s free built-in option for a few sessions before paying for anything.
What is the best free text-to-speech app for ADHD?
The one already on your phone: Speak Screen and Speak Selection on iPhone, Select to Speak on Android. Speechify also has a free plan, limited to 1.5x speed and 10 robotic sounding voices.
How much does Speechify cost?
Speechify Premium is $29 a month or $139 billed yearly, per its pricing page checked 2026-10-29. The free plan covers basic text to speech.
Can text to speech read a paper book?
Speechify’s Scan & Listen reads a photo of a printed page, and is listed under Premium. Android Select to Speak can read text through the camera in supported languages. For a whole novel, a library audiobook is usually easier.
Should I listen or follow along?
Try both. Following the highlighted words helps some readers keep their place; others do better listening with their eyes closed or while walking.
