How do you turn on read-aloud on iPhone?

Step 1: Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Read & Speak.
Step 2: Turn on Speak Selection to hear text you select, and Speak Screen to hear the whole screen.
Step 3: Under Speak Screen, set the highlighting style and turn on Show Controller if you want the controls to stay visible.
Step 4: To hear a page, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen. Use the controls to pause, change the rate, or go back.
Step 5: Drag the Speaking Rate slider until it feels slightly fast, not rushed.

Apple’s page also lists Accessibility Reader, a full-screen reading view with adjustable fonts, layouts and background colors, with an Autoplay option to read text aloud. If busy page layouts lose you, try it.

How do you turn on read-aloud on Android?

Step 1: Open Settings, then Accessibility, then Select to Speak, and turn it on.
Step 2: Start it with a two-finger swipe up (three fingers if TalkBack is on), or tap the Accessibility button.
Step 3: Tap an item to hear it, or drag across the text you want read.
Step 4: For printed text, Google says you can point the camera at it and use Select to Speak in supported languages, including English.

How do you get audiobooks for free?

Libby, from OverDrive, lets you borrow ebooks, audiobooks and magazines for free from your local library with a library card. It runs on iOS and Android and on the web at libbyapp.com, and lists offline downloads, playback up to 3x and a sleep timer that can stop at the end of a chapter.

Popular titles may have a wait. Place holds on the books you want and borrow something available today, so the habit does not stall on one title. How do you quiet the phone for free?

iPhone Focus can silence all notifications or allow only specific people and apps, and you can create a custom Focus for reading. Android’s Focus mode, in Digital Wellbeing, pauses the apps you choose; while it is on you cannot use them and get no notifications from them. Both are easy to turn off, which is the catch.
