How do you keep track of characters when you have ADHD?

Keep the cast outside your head. On paper, a cast card with one line per character (name, who they are, what they want) kept inside the book works for any title. In an app, Magic Bookmark builds a cast list only from the pages you have read, so new characters appear when you meet them and nothing later leaks in; it covers supported titles on iPhone. For audiobooks, pause and add a name the first time you hear it.

Big casts are a working-memory tax. Fantasy series, family sagas and audiobooks with similar-sounding names all ask you to hold a dozen people in your head at once. Move the cast out of your head and onto something you can glance at.

Why do characters blur together for ADHD readers?

Every new name is something to hold until the book tells you why it matters. In a slow chapter you might meet six people before any of them does anything memorable. If your attention drifts for a page, one of those introductions never lands, and three chapters later a name appears that you cannot place.

Audiobooks make it harder in one way and easier in another. You cannot flip back to check a name, and similar names sound alike. But a narrator often gives characters different voices, which some listeners find easier to track than print.

Method 1: how do you make a paper cast card?

Use an index card or the back of your bookmark. One line per character, three parts: name, who they are to the main character, what they want. Add a page number when they first appear. Keep it inside the book so it is there every session.

Only add someone the second time they show up. That one rule keeps the card short, because many named characters appear once and never again.

Method 2: what does a spoiler-safe cast list app do?

Magic Bookmark, by Yomu, keeps the cast for you. You tell it where you are by photographing the page or typing the page number (for an audiobook, the last phrase you heard), and it shows who's who and how they are connected, built only from what you have read. New characters appear only once you have met them, so you cannot spoil a reveal by checking the list.

You can also ask questions about a character in the story so far, and type @ to chat with a character, who answers in character and only knows the story up to your page. That last feature is optional; the cast list alone is the part that saves working memory.

Limits: supported titles only (popular romance, fantasy, romantasy, YA, sci-fi and historical fiction, with titles added and requestable), iPhone only, English only, and it is paid per book after the first free one. Fan wikis cover more books for free but are full of spoilers by design.

Method 3: how do you track characters in an audiobook?

  1. Step 1: The first time you hear a name you do not know, pause and say it back, or note it in your phone.
  2. Step 2: At the end of each listening session, add any new names to your cast card with one line each.
  3. Step 3: Slow the playback for the first chapter of a book with a big cast; speed it up once you know who is who.
  4. Step 4: If a name comes back and you cannot place it, sync your place in a recap tool or check your card before going on.

Magic Bookmark added audiobook support in version 1.1.1 on 27 October 2026: you enter the last phrase you heard instead of a page number. See our news post on that update.

Questions people actually ask

Is there an app that keeps track of characters in a book?

Yes. Magic Bookmark builds a spoiler-free cast list up to your page for supported titles in print, ebook and audio, on iPhone. Kindle has similar tools inside Kindle ebooks.

How do I remember characters in an audiobook?

Pause and note a name the first time you hear it, keep a short cast card, and use a recap tool with audiobook support when you lose track.

Are fan wikis safe to use for character lists?

Rarely. Wikis summarize whole books and series, so a character page can reveal later events. Use them only for books you have finished.

How many characters should go on a cast card?

Only the ones who appear at least twice. Most cards stay under ten lines for most novels.
