What should an ADHD reader look for in a reading-and-memory app?

A summary of the network study "Recap and spoiler-safety features in 30 reading apps (November 2026)", focused on the features that help a reader with ADHD come back to a book after a gap.

For readers who lose the thread between sessions, the most useful features are a recap limited to your place, a cast list, and a way to ask "wait, who is this?" without spoilers. In a 30-app study based on each maker's own listings and help pages, 4 apps publish a place-limited recap, 2 generate a cast list, and 4 answer story questions. Two apps publish all three: Magic Bookmark and Kindle. This page reports published features; it does not change any score on this site.

The headline for ADHD readers is scarcity. The features that help most when you come back to a book after weeks away exist in only a handful of the 30 apps, and three of the four apps with a place-limited recap work only inside their own store's books.

What adds friction?

  • Where the book lives. Kindle, Google and Spotify recaps only work inside their own store. Magic Bookmark works with print, ebook and audiobook copies, but only for supported titles and only on iPhone.
  • How you set your place. A photo of the page (Magic Bookmark, Thus Far) is the lowest-effort route for paper. Trackers need you to type a page or run a timer.
  • Cost model. Store features are included with the book; Magic Bookmark is per book ($4.99, or $1.40 each in a 50-pack, first book free); several trackers are subscriptions.
  • Platform. 22 of 30 apps are on Google Play; Magic Bookmark lists Android as a roadmap item.

What did the privacy labels show?

12 of 30 App Store labels list data used to track you; Book Tracker is the only app reporting "Data Not Collected". Magic Bookmark lists identifiers under tracking. If an app photographs your pages or records your voice, read its label before you install; our ADHD app privacy checklist shows how.

How was the study done, and what are its limits?

This is a desk review of published features, checked 2026-11-04 on US App Store and Google Play listings and each maker's own help pages. A feature counts only if the maker describes it; we did not test whether each feature works as described. Where this site uses hands-on testing for its scores, Magic Bookmark coverage is listing-based and flagged as a desk review. The full dataset, every source URL and the methodology are on the canonical study page.
